The year 2023 marked a significant period of growth and impact for the Minority Empowerment Network (MiEN). Through a variety of programs and initiatives, we strived to address pressing community needs, empower individuals, and build a more resilient and inclusive society. This report highlights our key accomplishments, challenges, and the valuable lessons learned throughout the year.

 

Key Programs and Services in 2023

  1. Mental Health Learning Workshops

  • Purpose: To raise awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma, and equip community members with coping strategies and resources.

  • Partnership: NYC Department of Health

  • Dates: June 17, 2023 (40-08 76th St, Elmhurst, NY) & August 19, 2023 (42-15 76th St, Elmhurst, NY)

  • Activities: Interactive sessions led by experts (including Deepak Chaudhari, MPA NYU Community Engagement & Training Specialist), group discussions, role-playing, and case studies.

  • Outcomes:

    • 35 participants across both workshops.

    • Increased knowledge of mental health conditions and resources.

    • Positive feedback on the effectiveness of the workshops.

  1. Underage Gambling Prevention Project

  • Funding: New York Council on Problem Gambling (NYCPG)

  • Purpose: To raise awareness about the risks of underage gambling and educate parents, teachers, and community leaders on prevention strategies.

  • Activities:

    • Two workshops (June 9, 2023 & August 20, 2023)

    • Publication and distribution of a calendar and posters.

    • Dissemination of flyers through social media and in the community.

  • Outcomes:

    • 21 participants (June 9) and 24 participants (August 20), including parents, educators, youth leaders, and business owners.

    • Increased awareness of underage gambling risks and prevention techniques.

    • Positive feedback and interest from other non-profits and community activists.

 

 

  1. Heat and Hot Water Workshop

  • Date: March 11, 2023

  • Purpose: To educate tenants about their rights regarding heating and hot water services and how to address issues.

  • Activities: Overview of city regulations, tenant rights, complaint procedures, and Q&A.

  • Partnership: Insights from the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).

  • Outcomes: Improved understanding of tenant rights and procedures for filing complaints.

 

  1. Eviction Workshop

  • Date: March 24, 2023

  • Purpose: To educate tenants about the eviction process, legal rights, and available resources.

  • Activities: Explanation of the eviction process, tenant rights, how to respond to notices, and information on legal aid and rent relief.

  • Partnership: Local legal aid organizations.

  • Outcomes: Increased knowledge of eviction procedures and available resources to prevent or address eviction.

 

  1. Job Assistance Program

  • Purpose: To help individuals, particularly those facing language barriers, secure employment.

  • Activities: Job search assistance, resume and cover letter writing, interview coaching, referrals, and ongoing support.

  • Outcomes: Increased job placements, improved job search skills, and stronger connections to employers.

  1. Immigrant Services

  • Purpose: To assist immigrants in navigating the U.S. immigration system.

  • Activities: Assistance with filling out forms (AR-11, I-765, I-131), guidance on address changes, employment authorization, and travel documents.

  • Outcomes: Successful form submissions, improved employment opportunities, reduced travel barriers, and enhanced immigrant integration.

 

  1. Help and Information Desk

  • Purpose: To bridge the gap between service providers and seekers, particularly new immigrants.

  • Activities: Connecting individuals with resources (housing, healthcare, legal), assisting with navigating services, providing language assistance (English and Nepali), and facilitating insurance access.

  • Outcomes: Increased service accessibility, smoother integration for new immigrants, and greater insurance coverage.

 

Challenges in 2023

  • Language Barriers: Difficulty in providing services to a diverse community with varying language needs.

  • Limited Resource Awareness: Many new immigrants were unaware of local resources.

  • Financial Constraints: Limited funding hindered the ability to offer more frequent workshops and expand services.

 

Recommendations for the Future

  • Recognizing the ongoing mental health crisis in New York City, MiEN will prioritize expanding its mental health initiatives.
  • Focus on prevention, addressing social, economic, racial, and cultural drivers of mental health issues.

  • Continue providing comprehensive support to immigrants navigating the complexities of the U.S. immigration system.

  • Expand language access and cultural competency across all programs.

  1. Job Assistance Program

  • Overview: Providing comprehensive support to job seekers, including job search assistance, resume and cover letter writing, interview coaching, and referrals.

  1. Perform, Preserve & Promote South Asian and All Countries Dances

  • Overview: Celebrating and preserving dance traditions through events in Queens, social media promotion, and collaborations with cultural organizations.

  • Goals:

    • Preserve cultural dance traditions.

    • Promote cultural awareness.

    • Encourage community engagement.

    • Provide a platform for dancers.

    • Increased cultural engagement.

Near Future Plans

  • Increase Program Frequency: Offer more frequent workshops and one-on-one assistance, particularly in mental health.
